When I first listened to the word "phonetics" in the university, I was a little bit concerned about studying this class because I thought "Why should I have to learn this in my major? I think this is going to be boring and useless". Hopefully, I was able to succeed in my phonetics class and during that semester I made up my mind about the aforementtioned thoughts and enjoyed knowing about consonant and vowel sounds, stress, intonation, linking sounds and some other things about pronunciation.
Nowadays that I am a teacher of English and have worked teaching phonetics for a couple of years in the major of teaching English, I see that pronunciation is one of the areas that we as teachers tend to forget. In fact, I can see in many cases that we focus more on grammar, spelling and teaching vocabulary rather than other listening and pronunciation.
Why is pronunciation necessary in our classes? Which are the pros and cons of incorporating pronunciation activities? Is teaching pronunciation interesting or boring? What are some activities we can incorporate? The answers for these and more questions are going to be aborded in further posts in this blog.
